Music lessons improve auditory perceptual and cognitive performance in deaf children

Despite advanced technologies in auditory rehabilitation of profound deafness, deaf children often exhibit delayed cognitive and linguistic development and auditory training remains a crucial element of their education. In the present cross-sectional study, we assess whether music would be a relevant tool for deaf children rehabilitation. Cognitive flexibility modulates maturation and music-training-related changes in neural sound discrimination

Previous research has demonstrated that musicians show superior neural sound discrimination when compared to non-musicians, and that these changes emerge with accumulation of training. Our aim was to investigate whether individual differences in executive functions predict training-related changes in neural sound discrimination. Music Training Enhances Rapid Neural Plasticity of N1 and P2 Source Activation for Unattended Sounds

Neurocognitive studies have demonstrated that long-term music training enhances the processing of unattended sounds. It is not clear, however, whether music training also modulates rapid (within tens of minutes) neural plasticity for sound encoding. To study this phenomenon, we examined whether adult musicians display enhanced rapid neural plasticity compared to non-musicians. Music segmentation studies have suggested that some consensus regarding boundary perception exists, despite individual differences.
